CSDA takes part in Great American Smokeout
The event is held each year to persuade smokers to quit, choosing this date as a day to quit smoking or to begin on their journey to kick the habit.
“We want people to be healthy – overall and especially their oral health,” CSDA Board President Dr. Michael Ungerleider said. “Tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of disease in the world – and is directly linked to gum disease and oral cancer.”
There are approximately 40 million people who still smoke cigarettes according to the American Cancer Society.
“Given all of the facts we now know, it’s clear that stopping use for even just one day can make a difference to your health,” Ungerleider said. “With the encouragement of the American Cancer Society and other groups and health professionals – this can be a huge first step towards quitting tobacco use all together. There is a wealth of support for quitting tobacco use – including your local dentist. You just have to take that first step towards being healthy, and taking care of your mouth and your body.”
